The English Manner is a unique British company and the leading global provider of contemporary protocol, etiquette, communication and cross-cultural integration tuition to give detailed knowledge and self confidence. Founded in 2001 by Alexandra Messervy FRSA, a former member of The Royal Household of Her Majesty The Queen, we have provided training for individuals, corporations, diplomats, royalty and VIPs. We offer tailored tutoring solutions for schools in both the UK and internationally and design cross-cultural mentoring and integration programmes for individuals coming to live or be educated in the UK.

Alexandra Messervy FRSA - Chief Executive & Founder
Previously a consultant to the world famous finishing school, Lucie Clayton, Alexandra brings over twenty-five years’ experience in etiquette, protocol and event planning and began her career in the Royal Household of Her Majesty The Queen. Alexandra enhanced her entertaining and social skills development knowledge working latterly for other members of the Royal Family and on several well-known charitable committees before founding The English Manner in 2001. During her career, she has regularly consulted with VIP residential households and hospitality clients in the areas of staffing, training, planning and management and is recognised for her attention to detail and exceptionally high standards. Alexandra was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2001 in recognition of her contribution to education.
Jimmy Beale - Managing Director
As of July 2014, Jimmy Beale became Managing Director of The English Manner, having joined as Director of Operations and Educational Development in 2013. He enjoyed an illustrious career in independent school education, where his most recent role was as Headmaster of a large, co-educational day and boarding Preparatory School. Prior to his twenty years in schools, he was a policeman and then, in the education sector, worked as a Housemaster, Head of Sixth Form and then Deputy Headmaster at a prestigious day and boarding Senior School prior to moving to lead a highly successful Junior School. Jimmy will bring his experiences of education and training to the fore, creating opportunities for both children and adults to improve their skills in a wide array of fields, both at home and abroad, as well as taking responsibility for the strategic development of the company.
Diana Mather - Director of Training & Senior Etiquette Tutor
Formerly a BBC newsreader, Diana brings years of first-rate communication and presentation skills. In the mid-eighties, Diana left her successful career in broadcasting to start training in etiquette and media coaching. In 2005 she was asked to devise a ‘finishing’ programme to improve manners for young ladies and a year later she introduced the first finishing school for gentleman, in Scotland. Diana works all over the world with a wide-range of clients that include MPs, senators, lawyers and TV presenters as well as organisations such as BT, Royal SunAlliance, BBC TV, health authorities and privatised utilities. She is the author of seven books, including two for children and her latest 'Secrets of Confident Communicators'.
William Hanson - Director of Operations & Senior Etiquette Tutor
William joined The English Manner in 2008, following a spell working in PR where he was tasked with organising luncheons and dinners for dignitaries, politicians and academics. In his role for The English Manner he has worked with and advised large companies such as Bentley, Champagne Bollinger, Green & Black's, National Lottery and Saudi British Bank. He has worked within VIP households and trained business professionals, school children, and diplomats alike. A perennial voice on the BBC, William comments on matters of taste and critiques social trends for a wide-range of media outlets including BBC Radio 2, Tatler and the MailOnline. He released the best-selling book ‘The Bluffer’s Guide to Etiquette’ in January 2014 and is currently penning a second for release in 2015. He is the world's only Guinness World Record holding etiquette expert!
Emma Dupont - Etiquette Tutor
Emma moved from the Cotswolds to London in 2002 and worked in the City of London as both an Independent Financial Adviser and Mortgage Broker. Her twenty years of experience in the fast-paced business world led her to take a keen interest in the subject of etiquette and manners, how the knowledge and practice of it can greatly influence success, along with the challenges that many modern women face balancing work and family life. She relentlessly pursued a knowledge of the subject by both studying and drawing on her own experiences. Emma now joins The English Manner following the completion of her very thorough information-base website Etiquette & Manners for the Contemporary Woman, which is read worldwide by ladies who wish to equip themselves with confidence-building skills to help them achieve their dreams and ambitions in both their business, social and family lives.
Lara Brotherton - Etiquette Tutor
After moving to London from Savannah, Georgia in 1990, Lara has built up a wealth of experience, firstly as Executive Assistant to a well-known British television CEO, where she liaised daily with captains of industry, celebrities and shareholders from the UK, Europe and the United States. Lara’s dedication to positive self-presentation (and love of shopping) led her to set up her own business in 2008. For the past few years she has run successful seminars in style, business etiquette and entertaining skills for students, interns and adult learners while continuing to work with private clients on their personal style and wardrobes. Introduced to The English Manner by one of our preferred VIP suppliers, Lara joined us in 2012 and is forging ahead in teaching social skills in schools as well as to our international clients, where she can lend a realistic viewpoint of international integration into the UK.
Angela Harwood - Etiquette & Elocution Tutor
A speaker of five languages, Angela Harwood (Countess Postiglione) tutors in cultural awareness, etiquette, effective English and elocution. She joined the United Nations at the early age of 21 and this began her interest in different cultures. Angela has lived in Geneva, Copenhagen, Vienna, Florence and Kuala Lumpur with her husband, a Director of the World Health Organisation with diplomatic status. She is CELTA qualified (Certificate of English Language Training to Adults) and was the Director of the Concord Programme at a tutorial college in Oxford. For many years she has prepared students from many different countries for British boarding schools and leading Universities as well as working with the Master of Balliol College, and now joins The English Manner as a consultant tutor.
John Robertson - Senior Household Management Tutor
John Robertson is a professional English Butler. Trained by the Ivor Spencer School for Butlers and Household Managers, London and by the Starkey Institute for Household Management, USA, John has been butler/house manager to two Forbes Billionaire List families and butler to senior members of British aristocracy. John joined The English Manner in 2003 and is also a founding member of the Charles MacPherson Academy for Butlers and Household Managers, Canada, and an Instructor at the Butler-Valet School, UK. John is also a professional Protocol and Etiquette Consultant holding certification from The Protocol School of Washington and The Etiquette and Leadership Institute. He is a member of Protocol and Diplomacy International – Protocol Officers Association and has been a featured speaker at its annual educational forums. Qualified in training staff and conducting professional seminars, John is retained by corporate and private clients including five- and seven-star hotels, management consultant firms, social clubs, private banks, private houses and yachts.
Barbara Allred - Senior Housekeeping Tutor
Barbara comes to The English Manner straight from a senior position in the British Royal Household's housekeeping department. She brings with her years of experience in first-rate housekeeping, cleaning and household management for VIP residences. Before she joined the Royal Household, Barbara was in the Communications Division of Women's Royal Naval Service. Barbara has trained staff in laundry skills, cleaning techniques and care of antique furniture on some of the world's largest superyachts and in private houses. She currently lives in Norfolk.
Mike Richardson - Protocol & EFL Tutor
Mike is an extensively experienced trainer, specializing in international protocol, communication skills and etiquette. He joined The English Manner in 2013. A former British Army officer with a distinguished career, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he spent his years as an Operational and Executive officer applying the exacting standards and protocols of the British Army within an international environment in Europe, Africa and America. Mike has considerable experience in delivering high profile events, involving members of the Royal Family and the Government, and senior British and international military and civilian officials. These events have included prestigious dinners, sizeable conferences, significant ceremonial parades and comprehensive programmes for visiting dignitaries. Mike is also a qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language and works with The English Manner in delivering international courses in protocol and business etiquette for students at the highest levels of their profession.
Maggie Moore - Etiquette Tutor (UAE)
Maggie Moore has more than 20 years’ experience in the Middle East and Asia, much of this working in the hospitality industry and in various executive positions in publishing, conference and trade show management. Educated at a top English private school, she went on to work extensively in the VIP hospitality sector, ending up as Personnel Director at the world famous The Ritz, London, as well as being appointed as their first female Duty Manager. She has worked as a broadcaster in Saudi Arabia and was Commercial Publishing Manager for Gulf Interiors magazine. In the UAE, Maggie ran The Hotel Show for several years and was named one of the Hotelier Middle East Power 50. Maggie joins The English Manner's Middle East Academy.
Louisa Miles - Coach & Mentoring Tutor
Louisa joined The English Manner in 2010 as a certified Motivational Life Coach and has assisted many clients developing their clarity, confidence and communication skills. She has been running a highly successful design consultancy for the last twenty years, working with clients such as Porsche, Siemens and Olympus. The design process requires great listening, visualizing and communication skills, all of which are transferable to the individual in designing a blueprint for positive living. When life can appear to us in shades of grey. Energy, motivation, passion, clarity - can all become depleted and suppressed. This is where you can use life coaching skills and strategies. Louisa’s 1:1 sessions are designed to provide practical, experienced, independent support, to help you see ‘the wood for the trees’ whilst adding colour to the whole of your life.
Gary Laverick - Non-Executive Chairman
As Non-Executive Chairman, Gary brings great depth of business and financial management experience to The English Manner. The Managing Director of a broad-based Business Finance provider supporting the UK SME market, Gary has focused upon a combination of simple, old-fashioned customer service values allied to innovative product development, use of technology, clear communication and team building. Formerly the CEO of a substantial investment management company, Gary describes himself as a "generalist rather than a specialist" and his ability to knit different skills and characteristics together is clearly of value to all the businesses with which he has involvement.
Ophelia Colley - China Representative
Ophelia joins The English Manner with over ten years of marketing experience in a number of blue chip firms. Ophelia was brought up in a traditional Chinese family in Hong Kong and educated at a prestigious British boarding school. She has a Masters degree in Marketing Management. She is also the Director and Founder of Prestigious Education, an education consultancy firm, who are the first agents of The Etiquette Connection Ltd and affiliated brands for China and an official agent for the Manchester United Soccer Schools. In her role as China Representative she now represents The English Manner to introduce Chinese and Asian clientele to the business.
Anna Kirkman - Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive
Anna is the Executive Assistant to Alexandra Messervy with responsibility for working alongside Alexandra specifically in the development of cultural tours and personal concierge services for The English Manner's clients. With a wealth of knowledge gained over twenty years of experience as a personal assistant in both small and large organisations, and particularly working with investment bankers in the City of London, Anna has the outstanding organisation and event management skills to deliver exceptional but discrete customer service at the highest levels. She now divides her time between London and her family home in Somerset where she lives with her husband and two children. In her spare time she enjoys the arts, food & drink and travelling.
