Cotswolds Arts and Crafts

April and September, 2009

Our programme will be led by our expert on English furniture and design, David Fletcher. David has been a Fine Art valuer and auctioneer for nearly 25 years. He spent five years running Sworders Saleroom before joining Bonhams, one of the UK's largest Fine Art Auctioneers, and now runs his own valuation company as well as working as a cataloguer and valuer for Lyon & Turnbull and Peacocks. David is well known as a lecturer on antiques and for his popular Antiques Evenings. He broadcasts regularly for the BBC and is part of the valuation team for BBC TV's popular 'Flog It'.

A general valuer with a special interest in English furniture, David's great love is the Arts and Crafts movement, and he will give our guests a fascinating insight into the designers and craftspeople who developed this in the Cotswold area. Interspersing visits with informal lectures and discussion, guests will be assured a relaxing yet informative weekend, in the sumptuous surroundings of a welcoming country house - learning with a difference!

  • Dinner and an informal discussion on the Arts and Crafts Movement in the Cotswolds, featuring Gordon Russell, the great William Morris and Ernest Grimson, Ernest Barnsley and the craftspeople of Sapperton who worked with the Biddulph family on Rodmarton Manor, and then at Owlpen.
  • A guided tour of Kelmscott Manor. Home of William Morris from 1871 until his death in 1896, the house contains a collection of the possessions and works of Morris and his associates, including furniture, textiles, carpets and ceramics.
  • A visit to the village of Sapperton, including lunch at The Bell Inn
  • A private visit to the home of Simon Biddulph at Rodmarton Manor, which was commissioned by his Grandparents with architect Ernest Barnsley as an entire showcase of the Arts and Crafts movement.
