AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRIVATE HOUSEHOLD: AU PAIRS, STUDENT NANNIES & AIDE DE LA MAISON - TASTER TRAINING FIVE DAY PROGRAMME

The programme is directed at those who wish to work in the UK or abroad as an aide de la maison, au pair or mother’s help, or perhaps student nannies who would like to broaden their domestic skills and learn how to live in complete harmony in the private household.

They include practical interactive exercises in a real household environment.

Day One

  1. Welcome, course outline and timetable

  2. Getting the most out of your training

  3. Setting the scene: the private household, the family, and the children

  4. Your role within the household - what is expected, boundaries and crossing the line

  5. Coaching and mentor session

  1. First impressions, colour and image presentation

  2. Communication etiquette

  3. Body language and interaction with peers, staff and guests

  4. Greeting and introductions

  5. Forms of address

  6. Non-verbal interpretation

  7. Accepting tips and gifts

  8. Mobile phones, email & IT issues and telephone manners

  9. How to answer the door

Day Two

  1. Household standards

  2. The White Book, The Red Board, and daily graces

  3. Hygiene issues

  4. Basic First Aid

  5. Washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and Agas

  6. The Nursery - room detailing

  7. Bed making

  8. Folding towels

  9. Loo seat etiquette

  10. Laundry skills

  11. Wardrobe care

  12. Packing and valeting skills

Day Three

  1. Child development

  2. Work, rest and play

  3. Angels, toddlers and teenage tyrants

  4. How to organise schedules (including play-dates, birthday parties, school pick ups and after school activities)

  5. Petty cash and managing a small budget

  6. Respect

  7. Tidying up

  8. Security & safety issues and self defence

  9. Escorting children

  10. Facebook and social networking

  11. Laundry skills II

  12. The household routine - daily graces review

  13. Leisure activities, time off and drinking off-duty

Day Four

  1. Room detailing practical tests

  2. The family kitchen and mealtimes

  3. Basic cooking skills - children's breakfasts, snacks, lunch and supper

  4. Cooking for kids & nursery tea parties

  5. Table manners

  6. Upstairs/Downstairs

Day Five

  1. First impressions review and conclusions

  2. Coaching and mentor review

  3. Sticky wickets, tests and evaluations

  4. Interview techniques

  5. Employee relations

  6. How to make the most of your training & future jobs

  7. Graduation, policies and procedures
