THE ETIQUETTE OF DECANTING

Jason Tesauro, Tutor and Author

A decanter is used in separating wine from sediment - helpful for unfiltered wines, vintage port, and bottles over seven years old that have thrown sediment during ageing.

A decanter will aerate your wine - helping young wines breathe, awaken and become expressive in the nose.

A decanter will aid a perfect host!

When performed gracefully, decanting is a delightful showstopper that eliminates the awkwardness of trying to pour  wine into a glass.  The plainest dinner table can be transformed when wine is poured from a  stylish decanter.

Like drawing a beer, pour the wine slowly into the decanter and allow it to cascade down the side.

Have a candle on the table, with the flame right behind the bottle to help you illuminate the inside and see when the sediment reaches the bottleneck so that it never drops into the decanter.

As for timing, decant younger vintages just before your guests arrive so that when they sit down to eat, the wine will be ready for perfect drinking.

The English Manner specialises in corporate etiquette and protocol training for the luxury travel, hospitality and retail sectors, and has worked with international businesses, hotels, oil companies and management consultancies, who recognised that their strengths lie in the interpersonal skills of their staff.

In a market where distinct luxury products are increasingly becoming commonplace, one saving grace remains - customer service. Today, luxury products are not always distinguished by their unique and superior features; rather, they are distinguished by the overall experience customers enjoy when using the product or service.

Many companies, both large and small, offer skills training courses in various spheres, but rarely does one hear of studies in good manners being high on the agenda. Yet in this day and age, with high-flying executives climbing their way up the corporate ladder at the speed of light, it is an area of importance that can get forgotten until it is almost too late.

For the luxury sectors, hospitality etiquette training is arguably the most important tool in any staff training programme and will turn the delivery of service into a completely unforgettable experience for the client, propelling the individual and their organisation into the elite ranks of their industry.

A calm and courteous approach can ease a thousand stressful situations, not only at work but at home. Courtesy is appreciated all over the world and common sense dictates that good manners and the marketplace should be totally compatible. In a competitive world where personal ambition and ruthless demands are paramount, it is sometimes hard to remember the rules of grace under pressure.

Whether for the corporate sector or private individuals, our up-to-date programmes focus on the key elements needed for  individuals to out-perform the competition.

Those aspiring to managerial positions, recent graduates marketing their skills for the fist time, foreign executives and those moving overseas will find our business etiquette skills tuition invaluable.

We are particularly well placed to offer tuition n international protocol, perhaps for executives and their families who will be working or moving abroad. Business today demands that we distinguish ourselves from the competition and our programmes reinforce skills already learned with the emphasis on different cultures and traditions, teaching valuable strategies on how to excel in the international arena.

Consultancy covers rank and status differences, communication styles, forms of address and introductions, codes of conduct, giving and receiving business cards, gift giving, comportment and dress and some tips on the etiquette of travel.

In a fast paced world, we have only seconds to make a favourable first impression and our social skills are under constant scrutiny. Because of this, we all need to have perfected our interpersonal skills and we must be able to adapt to change, whether we are meeting an entertaining overseas visitors, moving to a new area, or applying for membership of a new club or college.....

Our private consultation service is specifically for those with particular interests or instruction requirements. We will individually tailor each requirement and design a consultation based on this.
